Description
This flag is fabricated from cotton in two colours, featuring a red rectangular field with a large yellow star sewn in the center, obverse with the star flanked by two embroidered inscriptions in yellow threading, inscribed "QUÂN ĐỘI NHÂN DÂN VIỆT NAM" (Vietnam People's Army) above and "CHIẾN THẮNG ĐÀ NẴNG 1967" (Winner of Da Nang 1967) below, with a hoist sleeve for pole insertion stitched in place on the left side, the reverse of the flag with the aforementioned inscriptions backed by white threading, reinforced stitching on all four sides and along the seams, measuring 85 cm in width x 66 cm in height. The flag is very clean, free of stains, tears and holes, remaining as a quality Vietnam War relic. Near extremely fine.
Footnotes:
1. The Vietnam People's Army, also known as the Vietnamese People's Army and the People's Army of Vietnam, is the armed forces of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The VPA includes: Ground Force (including Strategic Rear Forces), Navy, Air Force, Vietnam Border Defense Force, and Vietnam Coast Guard. However, Vietnam does not have a specific separate Ground Forces or Army branch. All of the ground troops, army corps, military districts, and specialized arms belong to the Ministry of Defence (Vietnam), directly under command of the Central Military Commission, Minister of Defence, and General Staff (Vietnam People's Army). During the French Indochina War (1946-1954), the VPA was often referred to as the Việt Minh. In the context of the Vietnam War (1959-1975), the army was referred to as the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). This allowed writers, the U.S. military, and the general public, to distinguish northern communists from the southern communists, or Viet Cong. However, both groups ultimately worked under the same command structure. According to Hanoi's official history, the Vietcong was a branch of the VPA. In 2010, the Vietnam People's Army undertook the role of leading the 1,000th Anniversary Parade in Hanoi by performing their biggest parade in Vietnam's history.
2. Da Nang is a class-1 municipality and the fifth-largest city in Vietnam by municipal population. It lies on the coast of the South China Sea at the mouth of the Hàn River, and is one of Vietnam's most important port cities. As one of the country's five direct-controlled municipalities, it falls under the administration of the central government. During the Vietnam War, what is now the Da Nang International Airport was a major air base used by the South Vietnamese and United States Air Forces. The base became one of the world's busiest aircraft hubs during the war, reaching an average of 2,595 aircraft traffic operations daily, more than any other airport and airbase in the world at that time. The final U.S. ground combat operations in Vietnam ceased on August 13, 1972, when a residual force of the 196th Light Infantry Brigade stood down in Đà Nẵng. B Battery 3rd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment fired the final U.S. artillery round and the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment finished their final patrols. This residual force was known as "Operation Gimlet". After the U.S. withdrawal from the conflict, in the final stage of the conquest of South Vietnam by North Vietnam, Da Nang fell to the communist forces March 29-30, 1975. Vietnam issued two special postage stamps to commemorate this event, within its "total liberation" stamp set issued December 14, 1976. Since the era of the construction of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Da Nang has become essentially the third city after Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and Hanoi, to be an important urban centre of the central region of Vietnam. Da Nang boasts numerous educational institutes as well as important sites of economy
