(Ordo Sancti Gregorii Magni/Ordine di San Gregorio Magno). Instituted September 1st, 1831. Constructed of silver gilt, consisting of a Maltese Cross with ball finials, the obverse with a central blue enamelled circular disc bearing the leftward facing bust of St. Gregory, circumscribed “GREGORIUS MAGNUS” in capitalized lettering, the reverse with a similar central blue enamelled circular disc inscribed “PRO DEO ET PRINCIPE” (For God and Ruler) in lettering, circumscribed “GREGORIUS XVI P.M. ANNO I” in matching lettering, suspended from a green enamelled wreath denoting civil division, measures 57.1 mm (w) x 84.1 mm (h), accompanied by a full length neck ribbon, enamel restorations visible on the obverse 6 o’clock arm, small enamel chips notable on the cross, remains in very fine condition.
Accompanied by an Order of St. Gregory case, a hardshell red leatherette exterior, velvet interior medal bed, interior silk marked A. CASAZZA ROMA, measures 120 mm (w) x 165 mm (h), wear to exterior, hinge/catch functional in very fine condition.
