Description
A modern official award, inspired by the 1920 Delaware eagle featuring a lovely silver gilt left facing eagle with large outstretched heavily gilded wings, the body in white enamel and neck presenting gilt feather details, a central red enamelled eye, and large curved beak with black band, surrounding the eagle’s head is a green enamelled laurel wreath the white enamel tail is divided into seven distinct feathers with a characteristic shape to the central feather, grasped in the talons and sitting in front of the tail is a green enamelled laurel branch, the obverse medallion features a blue enamelled sky with three senators presenting a sword to Cincinnatus on a green enamelled foreground and crossed branches in the exergue, surrounded by a white enamelled oval ring with the inscription OMNIA RELINQUIT SERVARE REMPUBLICAN, the reverse medallion features Cincinnatus with a plow, setting sun, with Fame above in the blue enamelled sky, on a green enamelled foreground with hands clasping with a ribbon around them in the exergue, surrounded by a white enamelled oval ring inscribed SOCIETAS CINCINNATORUM INSTITUTA A.D. 1783, measures 31.73mm (w) x 47.37mm (h), weighs 39.4 grams (including neck ribbon), marked BB&B along left edge of ring, denoting Bailey, Banks & Biddle manufacture, worn on a modern neck ribbon with simple clasp, enamel in medallions is very thin but intact, two replacement rings have been connected to link the ribbon and eagle together, in overall very fine condition.
The Delaware Eagle appeared in the 1920s and is the largest singular regular issue eagle. It is identified in “The Insignia of The Society of the Cincinnati” by Minor Myers Jr, on page 104, eagle number 68.
