In bronze, engraved "The Congress to Joseph H Hill Co. A 27th Me Vol" on the reverse, measuring 53 mm (w) x 69 mm (h) inclusive of its eagle and crossed cannons and cluster of cannonballs suspension, variation of the American flag in the ribbon, bronze pinback hanger with U.S. shield, very light contact, near extremely fine. In a leather presentation case, pebbled exterior, four-panel fold-out design, inside with the medal bed in navy blue velvet, the top and bottom panels in light blue satin, snap closure, with creasing and wear evident on the exterior, rust on the snap closure, case better than very fine. Accompanied by twelve pages of research material.
Footnote: Joseph Henry Hill was born in September 1830 in Limerick, York County, Maine. He served during the Civil War with Company A, 27th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment for nine and a half months, from September 30, 1862 to July 17, 1863. Hill lived in Limerick and Kennebunk, Maine prior to 1880 and, after a brief residence in New York, moved to Everett, Massachusetts, where he was a conductor for the elevated railway. He died on May 26, 1901, at the age of 61, in Everett, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, from "suicide by hanging" after being discharged from his job in 1901 and is buried in Forest Dale Cemetery in Malden, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, Section 28, Lot 213.
