Instituted July 12, 1862. Type VI. (1964-). In bronze gilt with green enamels, measuring 38.9 mm (w) x 57 mm (h) inclusive of its eagle and "VALOR" suspension, engraved "THE CONGRESS TO" on the reverse of the suspension, on an original full-length neck ribbon with horizontal octagonal thirteen star cravat pad sewn in place, triple snap closure, intact enamels, extremely fine.
Contained in an original case of issue, measures 110 mm (w) x 180 mm (h) x 25 mm (d), velvet interior, light wear to exterior, very fine. Accompanied by a ribbon bar and boutonniere.
Footnote: The Medal of Honor is the United States' highest medal for valor in combat that can be awarded to members of the armed forces. The medal was first authorized in 1861 for Sailors and Marines, and the following year for Soldiers as well. Since then, more than 3,400 Medals of Honor have been awarded to members of all DoD services and the Coast Guard. Medals of Honor are awarded sparingly and are bestowed only to the bravest of the brave; and that courage must be well documented.
