Footnote: J. Edgar Hoover was born on January 1, 1895, in Washington, D.C. He attended George Washington University, earning a law degree in 1917, and later studied at Columbia University. Hoover began his career in the Department of Justice in 1917 and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the acting director of the Bureau of Investigation in 1924, which later became the FBI. Over his long career, he built the FBI into a professionalized federal agency and remained a dominant figure in American law enforcement until his death in 1972.
