United States. A Rare Thompson Aviation Racing Prize, c.1935

The Thompson Trophy Race, was an event that epitomized the glory days of National Air Races. Established in 1929, the race was 10 miles (16 km) long with 50-foot-high (15 m) pylons marking the turns, and emphasized low altitude flying and maneuverability at high speeds. As the race was flown around a closed course, crowds in the grandstands could easily see much of the spectacle.

Offered is a runners up prize, consisting of a heavy brass box, very art deco in design, with a green lacquer exterior and wooden interior, it features a bronze Thompson Trophy at centre with two racing aircraft running in parallel, felt bottom and marked by Allen, Cleveland, measuring 22.5 cm (l) x 10 cm (w) and 5.5 cm (d), with minor wear to lacquer, very fine and rare.
