Description
Footnote: Frank R. Stanfield was from Hinsdale, Illinois. In the rank of First Lieutenant with the 101st Airborne Division, United States Army, he was awarded the Silver Star under General Orders No. 4 (1945), for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against enemy tanks at Noville, Belgium, as part of the Siege of Bastogne, on December 20, 1944 during the Second World War. In the newspaper article, Captain Heber Minton stated to the reporter that "Stanfield's learning. He shot at a tank with a rifle, and a Kraut tried to knock down our house." Stanfield himself was also interviewed, described the confrontation with the tank: "He sure blew a fuse when I shot at him. From then on, I was shooting, throwing grenades and ducking." He went on to describe his exploits in Noville, the subsequent battle and the eventual destruction of the town. Stanfield was later promoted to the rank of Captain and was awarded the Bronze Star while with the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy, on March 12, 1945 in Europe during the Second World War.
