Grand Star, 2nd Grade: insignia in bronze gilt with red, pale yellow and navy blue enamels, mounted to a silver ten-pointed star base, marked ""Rd"", ""800"" (silver) and ""JB"" on the reverse, measuring 60.5 mm (w) x 57.8 mm (h), horizontal pinback, on its original full-length neck ribbon; and Badge: in bronze gilt with red, pale yellow and navy blue enamels, measuring 23.2 mm (w) x 46 mm (h), original ribbon suspended from a hanger with pinback, the hanger in bronze gilt with red, pale yellow, navy blue and green enamels and inscribed ""SPECIAL SERVICE 1886"", the hanger exhibiting chipping in the pale yellow enamels on the flowers and in the green enamels on the right leaf, along with gilt wear on the inscription. Together, better than very fine.
Footnote: The Primrose League was an organization for spreading Conservative principles in Great Britain and was founded in 1883. At a late point in its existence, its declared aims (published in the Primrose League Gazette, vol.83, no.2, March/April 1979) were: To Uphold and support God, Queen, and Country, and the Conservative cause; To provide an effective voice to represent the interests of our members and to bring the experience of the Leaders to bear on the conduct of public affairs for the common good; To encourage and help our members to improve their professional competence as leaders; and To fight for free enterprise. It's motto was ""Imperium et Libertas"" (Government and Freedom), the organization disbanded in 2004.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
