Description
Hardcover, teal blue cloth cover, silver embossed regimental insignia on the front cover, with dust jacket, entitled "The Proud Trooper - The History of the Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick's Own) Yeomanry from its raising in the Eighteenth-Century till 1964" by Major W. Steel Brownlie, MC, TD, MA, published by Wm. Collins, Sons & Co., Ltd. for the Ayrshire Yeomanry, bound in two-tone linson, supplied by R. & W. Watson, Ltd., Linwood, Scotland, printed in Great Britain by Robert Cunningham and Sons Ltd., Longbank Works, Alva in 1964. It is "dedicated to those who in peace or in war have helped to make the Ayrshire Yeomanry something to be proud of." It is divided into four sections entitled: 1. The Early Days (with three chapters); 2. The South African War (with five chapters); 3. The First World War (with five chapters); 4. The Second World War (with ten chapters). It concludes with a Regimental roll, a Roll of Honour, Honour and Awards, followed by nine Appendices and an Index. As described on the dust jacket: "This book tells the story of the Ayrshire (East of Carrick's Own) Yeomanry, the senior regiment of Scotland's auxiliary forces. In the Ayrshire of Robert Burns, one day towards the end of the eighteenth century, a few local farmers visited the Earl of Cassillis. They said that if he would take command of them, they would form a troop of horse for the defence of the district, "free of all expense to government." That was the beginning. In the intervening years the Yeomen have served as cavalry, mounted infantry, infantry, gunners, and tank and reconnaissance troops. Having acted as riot police in the turbulent Radical days, they fought through three wars, in South Africa, in Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine, Flanders, Tunisia, Italy, Normandy, Belgium, Holland and Germany. This book follows all these campaigns in full detail, with a wealth of maps and illustrations, and an ample index including references to some 300 units and formations with which the Yeomanry has been associated. Going far beyond the scope of the usual regimental history." It contains 640 pages, the text, line drawings and maps printed in black ink, with various black and white, along with colour plates, inserted at select intervals throughout, measuring 155 mm (w) x 235 mm (h) x 37 mm (d), small stain present on the side edges of the pages on the exterior, foxing evident on the dust cover. Better than very fine.
