The Commander-in-Chief's Body Guard (C.I.B.G.) was a prestigious volunteer mounted regiment of the Cape Colony, tracing its origins to 1855 as the personal escort of the Governor and Commander-in-Chief. During the Second Boer War (1899–1902), the regiment was mobilized for active service with the Colonial Forces, undertaking reconnaissance, patrol, convoy escort, and line-of-communication duties across the Cape Colony and Orange River Colony. Its members served as mounted infantry, providing valuable local knowledge and mobility in operations against Boer commandos during both the conventional and guerrilla phases of the war. The regiment earned a reputation for reliable service in protecting transport routes and supporting British columns in the field, reflecting the important contribution made by South Africa's colonial volunteer units to the British war effort.
