United Kingdom. A Queen’s South Africa Medal to Pte. Inghram, 1st Royal Dragoons

A Queen’s South Africa Medal. Instituted 1899. In silver, rim officially engraved 3529 Pte G. INGHRAM. 1/Rl. Drgns with NATAL clasp, ghost dates on the reverse, bright, minor contact marks, extremely fine.

Footnote: Private G. Inghram is on the QSA Medal Roll, with remarks “deceased” as of November 1, 1901. Additional research identifies the cause of death as enteric fever. He was entitled to the Natal clasp. 

The 1st (Royal) Dragoons served throughout the Second Boer War as part of the British Army's regular cavalry forces in South Africa. The regiment took part in the early operations in Natal and the Transvaal, including the relief of Ladysmith and General Buller's advance into the Boer republics. Subsequently employed in reconnaissance, screening, and pursuit operations, the Royal Dragoons participated in numerous actions against Boer commandos during the guerrilla phase of the war. The regiment earned several battle honours for its South African service, and members qualified for the Queen's and King's South Africa Medals with various clasp combinations reflecting participation in the campaign's major operations.
