Description
A Queen’s South Africa Medal, in silver, rim officially impressed 6100 PTE W. EVETTS. E. YORKS REGT with ORANGE FREE STATE and SOUTH AFRICA 1902 clasps, bright, light scratches, near extremely fine condition.
An East Yorkshire Cap Badge, in bronze and white metal, measures 44.3 mm (w) x 42.8 mm (h), reverse slider intact, marked J. R. GAUNT B’HAM, very fine.
A Temperance Medal, in bronze and enamels, plain reverse, measures 39.7 mm (w) x 50.1 mm (h), worn on original ribbon, very fine.
A Soldier’s New Testament South Africa 1900 Bible, 400 pages, limp cloth covered boards, faded, worn consistent with age, very fine.
Footnote: W. Evetts is on the 2nd Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment roll for the Queen’s South Africa and King’s South Africa Medals. The East Yorkshire Regiment served in the Second Boer War with its 2nd Battalion, which arrived in South Africa in late 1899 as part of the British reinforcements sent following the setbacks of "Black Week." The battalion participated in operations in the Orange Free State and Transvaal, including the advance under Lord Roberts that resulted in the capture of Bloemfontein and Pretoria. As the war developed into a guerrilla conflict, the regiment was employed in sweeps against Boer commandos, convoy escorts, blockhouse duties, and the protection of lines of communication. Like many British infantry battalions in South Africa, the East Yorkshires spent much of the latter part of the war conducting mobile operations across the veldt to restrict Boer movement and support the British counter-guerrilla campaign, earning the regiment the battle honour "South Africa, 1900–02."
