Instituted 1899. In silver, rim officially impressed in block capitals H. NEWBERRY, CH.P.O., H.M.S. GIBRALTAR. with replacement ribbon, bright, minor wear, extremely fine.

Footnote: Harry Newberry was born in 1869, in Brading, Isle of Wight. He enlisted in September, 1887 at the age of 18. His previous occupation was listed as errand boy. He began serving on the St. Vincent, and proceeded to serve aboard 20 other ships. During the Boer War, Newberry was a chief petty officer on the HMS Gibraltar. The ship served on the Cape of Good Hope and West Africa Station during the Second Boer War, carrying troops and supplies, escorting shipping, and safeguarding British sea communications around southern Africa. Although not engaged in major naval combat, the cruiser played an important logistical role in supporting British operations throughout the campaign.
