A British War Medal. Instituted 1919. In silver, rim officially impressed 134006 SPR. A. THOMSON. R. E., lovely patina, minor wear, extremely fine. 

Footnote: A. Thomson is on the King’s South Africa Medal Roll for the 9th Company, Royal Engineers.  Sapper Thomson of the Royal Engineers is also on the Medal Roll for the British War Medal and Victory Medal during the First War. 

The Royal Engineers played an indispensable role during both the Second Boer War (1899–1902) and the First World War (1914–1918), providing the technical expertise upon which British military operations depended. In South Africa, Royal Engineer companies constructed and repaired railways, bridges, roads, and telegraph lines, operated armoured trains, laid and cleared mines, built blockhouses and defensive works, and maintained vital communications across vast distances. Their efforts ensured the movement of troops and supplies and were particularly crucial during the later guerrilla phase of the war, when Boer commandos frequently sabotaged railways and infrastructure.

During the First World War, the Royal Engineers expanded enormously and served on every front, undertaking trench construction, tunnelling, bridge building, road and railway operation, water supply, signalling, camouflage, and battlefield fortifications. They were also responsible for mining operations beneath enemy positions, the development of field communications, and the construction of camps, depots, and logistical infrastructure. Their versatility and engineering expertise made them one of the British Army's most important corps, supporting virtually every aspect of military operations from the Western Front to the Middle East and beyond.
