A Queen’s Mediterranean Medal, in silver, rim impressed 7777 PTE J.E. WALTON. YORKS. L.I., notable edge knocks, light wear, extremely fine.
Accompanied by a photocopy of WO100/386, the nominal roll for the 3rd Battalion, K.O. Yorkshire L.I.
Footnote: 7777 Pte. J. E. Walton, York L.I. is on the nominal roll for the Mediterranean Medal. He was a private in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI), one of the militia battalions awarded the Queen's Mediterranean Medal for overseas garrison service during the Second Boer War. The battalion served in the Mediterranean, principally at Malta, where it relieved regular army units that were being sent to South Africa. The battalion's duties included garrison service and guarding Boer prisoners of war, thereby freeing regular troops for active operations in the field. Approximately 768–775 Mediterranean Medals were awarded to members of the KOYLI battalion.
