Description
Description
A framed and hand-coloured lithograph on paper, titled “The Review at Chobham - The Troops Passing Before Her Majesty”, by August Butler and published by Stannard & Dixon. The lithograph depicts Queen Victoria seated with most of the Royal party standing, while cavalry regiments parade past them, with tents and thousands of infantry troops in the background. It is contained behind a flat pane of glass, featuring a light brown mounting board, with an ornate chocolate-brown wooden frame. The reverse features a khaki paper backer with a twisted magnetic wire, mounted to either side of the frame, to allow for wall hanging. The frame including the lithograph measures 66 cm (w) x 52 mm (l). The lithograph has been altered, with rounded edges at the top. It is free of stains, rips, or tears, with bright colours remaining and only light age spotting throughout. The frame with a small chip missing out of the top section, in overall near extremely fine condition.
Footnote: In 1853 Chobham Camp in the United Kingdom was the scene of the first large-scale manoeuvres in Britain since the Napoleonic Wars. From June 14th to June 25th, 8,000 men, 1,500 horses, and 24 guns mustered in the area for drill, field operations and parades. It attracted large crowds of spectators, including royalty and foreign dignitaries, and was recorded in numerous prints and paintings.
