The 17th (Duke of Cambridge's Own) Lancers served with distinction during the Second Boer War (1899–1902) as part of the British Army's cavalry arm. Arriving in South Africa in 1900, the regiment participated in operations in the Orange Free State and Transvaal, undertaking reconnaissance, screening, patrol, and pursuit duties against Boer commandos. During the later guerrilla phase of the war, the 17th Lancers took part in numerous mobile column operations and "drives" designed to restrict Boer movement and protect lines of communication. Their service reflected the transition of British cavalry from traditional shock action to the mounted infantry and scouting roles demanded by the South African campaign.
