Description
Description
Instituted 1907. In silver, rim officially impressed (local units) TPR. J. P. CORNELIUS, NORTHERN D. M. RIFLES. with 1906 clasp, lovely toning, minor wear, extremely fine.
Accompanied with a photocopy of the Natal Medal Roll page.
Footnote: Trooper J. P. Cornelius is on the Recipients of the Natal 1906 Medal list.
The Northern District Mounted Rifles (N.D.M.R.) were a Natal colonial volunteer mounted unit mobilised for service during the Natal Native Rebellion (Bambatha Rebellion) of 1906. Recruited largely from settlers in northern Natal, the corps was employed as part of the mobile column system used to suppress the uprising. During the campaign, the N.D.M.R. carried out reconnaissance, patrol work, convoy escort, and rapid mounted movements through the rugged valleys and hills of the region, where rebel forces under Bambatha kaMancinza and allied chiefs operated.
The unit formed part of the wider colonial force tasked with locating and dispersing rebel groups, protecting communications, and supporting regular and police columns in the field. Operations involved hard marching and mounted sweeps through difficult bush and mountainous terrain, culminating in the containment and defeat of the rebellion by mid-1906. The service of the N.D.M.R. reflects the important role of locally raised Natal volunteer cavalry in the suppression of the uprising.
