Multi-piece construction, enamelled centrepiece on both sides, each centrepiece placed within a ring in Gold with navy blue enamels, the badge in silver with the seven arms in white enamels, the badge surmounted by the King's crown, unmarked, measuring 46.3 mm (w) x 66.2 mm (h) inclusive of its integral ring, intact enamels, accompanied by its original full-length neck ribbon, extremely fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, the lid marked in gold-coloured ink "C. M. G." (Commander), inside lid in white satin and marked with the King's crown above the maker mark "GARRARD & Co Ltd. / by special appointment / TO HIS MAJESTY THE KING / 24, ALBEMARLE St LONDON / & Dalhousie Sq. Calcutta.", an insert with a raised platform in navy blue felt housing a recessed medal bed, measuring 84.5 mm (w) x 157 mm (h) x 34.5 mm (d), extensive scuffing and wear evident on the exterior, case fine.
Footnote: The Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George was instituted on August 12, 1818 by King George III. It is awarded for services to British interests abroad, particularly in the Diplomatic Service. For each level of the award, the recipient is entitled to use the post-nominal letters: Knight or Dame Grand Cross (GCMG), Knight Commander (KCMG), Dame Commander (DCMG) and Companion (CMG).
