Instituted in 1901, Renamed in 1914. In silver, bearing the monogram of King George V in the centre on the obverse, unnamed, maker marked "SG" (Sebastian Garrard), hallmarked with the British lion, marked with a leopard's head (made in London) and date marked "d" (1919) on the reverse, measuring 42.7 mm (w) x 47.5 mm (h) inclusive of its integral ring, scattered tarnishing and surface wear overall, original ribbon with pinback, better than very fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, black pebbled exterior, inscribed "D. S. Cross" (Distinguished Service Cross) in gold-coloured ink on the lid, inside lid in white satin, padded, maker marked "GARRARD & Co Ltd" and exhibiting the impression of the cross from the medal bed, base with a recessed medal bed and slotted for the pinback in violet felt, measuring 68 mm (w) x 124.5 mm (h) x 23 mm (d), exhibiting extensive wear on the exterior covering that exposes the underlying wooden framework, case near fine.
Footnote: The Distinguished Service Cross was instituted on June 15, 1901 as the Conspicuous Service Cross. It was renamed the Distinguished Service Cross in October 1914. It is awarded for gallant or distinguished naval service in face of the enemy, to officers in the Royal Navy or merchant service until 1993, since then it may be awarded to any rank, the recipient entitled to use the post-nominal letters "DSC".
