A five piece medal bar, court mounted with reverse with dark blue felt, comprising:
A Queen’s South Africa Medal, in silver, rim officially engraved 6529 Pte W. WHEELER. Rifle Bde. with TRANSVAAL and LAING’S NEK, dark patina around the edges, light wear, extremely fine.
A King’s South Africa Medal, in silver, rim officially impressed 6529 PTE. W. WHEELER RIFLE BRIGADE with SOUTH AFRICA 1901 and SOUTH AFRICA 1902 clasps, dark patina, light wear, extremely fine.
A 1914-15 Star, in bronze gilt, reverse impressed 99297 GNR. W. WHEELER, R.F.A., light wear, very fine.
A British War Medal, in silver, rim impressed 99297 GNR. W. WHEELER. R.A., dark patina, light wear, extremely fine condition.
A Victory Medal, in silver, rim impressed 99297 GNR. W. WHEELER. R. A., notable loss of gilt, small contact marks, very fine.
Accompanied with photocopies of the single First War attestation page, and QSA medal roll.
Footnote: William Wheeler’s medal card confirms his decorations while serving with the Royal Field Artillery. Wheeler was 38 and employed as a Butler when he enlisted for short service in June 1915. He previously served 12 years with the Rifle Brigade during the Boer War
Wheeler is on the medal roll for QSA, serving with the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade Regiment under service no. 6539. The Rifle Brigade served throughout the Second Boer War, taking part in the Natal campaign, the Relief of Ladysmith, and the advance into the Orange Free State and Transvaal. During the later guerrilla phase, its battalions conducted convoy escort, blockhouse, and anti-commando duties, earning a reputation as an effective and highly mobile light infantry regiment.
