Description
(Kungliga Nordstjärneorden). Instituted February 23rd, 1748. A fine quality example, constructed of gilded silver, consisting of a white enameled Maltese Cross with dual ball finials, with Swedish Royal Crowns in the quadrants between the arms of the cross, the obverse and reverse with a circular dark blue enameled medallion bearing a gilded star composed out of five enameled pieces, circumscribed “Nescit Occasum” (It knows no Decline), with arabesques at the top of the cross to allow the award to be suspended from its hollow swivel crown using its period original and full length neck ribbon, unmarked, measuring 54.8 mm (w) x 80.0 mm (l), unmarked, weighing 34.81 grams.
Accompanied by its presentation case, constructed of a lightweight wooden core with a lightly textured red faux leather (leatherette) exterior, the exterior of the case is embellished with arabesques in gilt around the edge of the lid, with a sticker on the bottom reading “Dottore Pietro Meschini - Vice Segr. Gen. della Presidenza della Repubblica” and “Commander of the Royal Order of the Polar Star of Sweden” in black ink, with a functional exterior metal hinge, intact interior fabric hinge cover, and functional exterior clasp closure, the interior of the lid is lined with padded off-white silk and is marked “C.F. Carlman, Stockholm” in gilt, measuring 128 mm (w) x 88 mm (l).
A fine example of an attributed and cased Royal Order of the Polar Star, II. Class Commander, Type II, with the enamels beautifully preserved, in overall better than extremely fine condition.
