(Orden del Mérito Militar). Instituted by Queen Isabel II on August 3, 1864. White Distinction. King Alfonso XIII’s period (1902-1931). An eight-pointed multi-rayed star in silver, featuring cluster of three double beaded rays in each arms, obverse featuring an enameled white four-armed cross in silver gilt, with a gilt crown and clasp on the 12 o’clock arm, presenting alternated heraldic gilt symbols of the Castles and Lions in each quadrant, the centre with a red, white and blue enamel Spanish coat of arms also in silver gilt, the reverse with pin assembly flanked by two stays, measuring 62.35 mm (w) x 61.18 mm (h), with light contact and minor tarnished silver, very fine.</p>
<p>Footnote: The Order of Military Merit was instituted by Queen Isabel II/Isabella II on August 3, 1864. It was established to recognize either Spanish or foreign military personnel for outstanding and meritorious actions displayed in time of war or peace. The Order was originally awarded in two different categories. The awards with white distinction were awarded in recognition of distinguished services rendered in peacetime, while the awards with red distinction were awarded in recognition of courage and effective actions in combat.
