(Orden al Mérito Militar). Instituted in 1814 by King Ferdinand VII of Spain. Alfonso XIII’s issue. Of highly manufacture in enamels and Gold, a nicely enameled red four armed cross with ornamented Gold edges, surmounted by detailed period Spanish royal crown also in Gold, obverse centre featuring an enameled period Spanish coat of arms, the reverse presenting an Isabel II’s cypre on an enameled white background, measuring 36.92 mm (w) x 58.58 mm (h - inclusive of royal crown), weighting 12 grams, marked by French hallmark denoting imported gold items since 1893, with minor loss of gilt on the obverse centrepiece, presumably replaced reverse medallion is displayed backwards, suspended by original breast ribbon, extremely good.
Footnote: The Order of Military Merit (Orden del Mérito Militar) was instituted by Queen Isabel II/Isabella II on August 3, 1864. It was established to recognize either Spanish or foreign military personnel in recognition of outstanding and meritorious actions in time of war or peace. the decorations with Red Distinction (red enamels) were awarded for courage and effective actions in combat.
