(Real y Muy Distinguida Orden de Carlos III). Instituted 1771 by King Charles III of Spain. (1890-1926 Issue). A fine early 19th century reduced size cross, consisting of a ball-tipped enameled white and blue Maltese Cross in bronze gilt, surmounted by period delicate laurel wreath suspension also in bronze gilt, with quadrants displaying typical Spanish fleur-de-lis in gilt, the obverse centre exhibiting a hand-made image of St. Mary in enamel, the reverse centre with a white-enameled cypher of Charles III, along with the motto VIRTUTI ET MERITO, measuring 19.65 mm (w) x 33.82 mm (h - inclusive of wreath suspension), presenting ball finials with lost of gilt, cross with minor enamel loss, accompanied by original full-length sash ribbon with bow, which is authorized to be used with the Grand Cross miniature as equivalent to the Grand Cross badge, good/fine.
Footnote: The Royal and Distinguished Order of Charles III was established by King Charles III of Spain on September 19, 1771. It was founded to mark the occasion of the birth of his grandson Charles V, future heir of the Spanish throne. The Order was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, and was confirmed by Pope Clement XIV on February 21, 1772.
