2. (Medalla de la Campaña de la Isla de Cuba) Cuba Campaign Medal 1895–1898, bronze medal with ornate crown suspension, the obverse bearing crowned cipher and profile of Alfonso XIII surrounded by inscription relating to the Cuban Campaign, suspended from a correct replacement ribbon composed of alternating vertical red and violet stripes, measuring 37.1 mm x 55.1 mm inclusive of the suspension device, exhibiting heavy corrosion and oxidation throughout, with plain reverse.
3. (Medalla de Constancia de Voluntarios de Cuba) Cuban Volunteers Constancy Medal, silvered bronze cross-shaped medal with fleur-de-lis terminals, the obverse bearing left-facing bust of Alfonso XII within circular inscription dated “1882,” the reverse inscribed “CONSTANCIA PATRIOTISMO ABNEGACION,” suspended from a red ribbon with central yellow stripe and fitted with a bar denoting 10 years of service, measuring 45.6 mm x 47.5 mm inclusive of the suspension device.
All items are in fine condition overall, with expected age-related wear, ribbon wear and fading, corrosion, oxidation, and surface marks.
Footnote: These decorations relate to Spain’s late colonial military campaigns and volunteer forces during the final decades of the Spanish Empire. The Philippine Campaign Medal recognized Spanish military personnel who served during the Philippine insurrectionary campaigns against nationalist forces between 1896 and 1898. The Cuba Campaign Medal commemorated service in Cuba during the Cuban War of Independence, one of the conflicts that culminated in the Spanish-American War and the loss of Spain’s overseas colonies in 1898. The Cuban Volunteers Constancy Medal was awarded to members of the Volunteer Corps in Cuba for long and faithful service, with bars denoting periods of service and emphasizing loyalty to the Spanish Crown during the turbulent colonial period.
