(Orden del Mérito Civil, Comendador de Número). Instituted in 1926. Type II (1942-1975). Five-piece construction, in silver with blue and white enamels, unmarked, the central insignia with blue Saltire Cross surmounted by the Franco crown (Imperial crown), measuring 69.3 mm (w) x 71 mm (h), vertical pinback flanked by dual stays, intact enamels, extremely fine. In its hardshelled case of issue, insignia bearing the Spanish coat-of-arms in bronze gilt affixed to the lid, royal blue pebbled exterior, inside lid in white satin, padded and maker marked "CONDECORACIONES JOYERÍA CEJALVO Cruz 5 - MADRID", base with a medal bed in royal blue felt and slotted for the breast star, measuring 108.5 mm (w) x 108.5 mm (h) x 31.5 mm (h), wear and scuffing evident on the exterior, the insignia on the lid exhibiting gilt wear, case better than very fine.
Footnote: The Order of Civil Merit was instituted on June 25, 192 and is awarded to Spanish government employees for meritorious service, and to Spaniards and foreigners for extraordinary services to the nation, in the following grades: Collar, Grand Cross, Commander by Number, Commander, Officer, Knight, and Silver Cross.
