Footnote: Spanish colonial and campaign medals associated with Cuba reflect the final decades of Spanish rule in the Caribbean and the conflicts that culminated in the Spanish–American War. Volunteer battalion medals such as the Asturian and Catalonian examples were privately issued or regionally sponsored commemorations recognizing Spanish volunteers serving in Cuba, while official campaign medals documented participation in military operations during the Cuban insurrections and the 1895–1898 campaign. The Havana blockade commemorative piece relates directly to the American naval blockade imposed during the Spanish–American War, which effectively isolated the island and contributed to the collapse of Spanish authority in Cuba.
