Footnote: The South African Engineer Corps traces its origins to the early development of organized military engineering units in South Africa during the Union period, with its modern foundations established in the early 20th century (formally reorganized by 1913–1914 under the Union Defence Force). During World War I, its personnel—drawn largely from the South African Engineer units and attached formations—played a crucial support role in campaigns in German South-West Africa and German East Africa. They were responsible for building and maintaining roads, railways, bridges, water supplies, and field fortifications in harsh colonial and desert conditions, as well as carrying out demolitions and infrastructure repair essential to mobility and supply.
