Serbia, Kingdom. A Cross of Charity, Type I, Rare Variation, c.1918

(Крст милосрђа). A rare variation of this award in gilt with applied obverse and reverse centre enameled overhanging discs, a four-armed cross with tapered arms and a central circular medallion, obverse centre bearing the Serbian double-headed eagle within a red enamel field, reverse centre in red enamel inscribed “За веру и Божју правду 1912” translating to “For Faith and God’s Justice 1912,” suspended from a silk light blue ribbon, measuring 35.59 mm (w) x 41.35 mm (h), extremely fine.

Footnote: The Cross of Charity (Крст милосрђа), also known as the Cross of Mercy, was established in 1913 following the Balkan Wars to recognize humanitarian and medical service rendered during the conflicts of 1912–1913. It was awarded primarily to individuals who provided aid, nursing, and charitable assistance to the wounded and displaced. The decoration reflects the strong association between national service, Orthodox symbolism, and charitable duty in the Kingdom of Serbia during the early twentieth century.
