Description
(Ordinul Coroana României). Instituted on March 14th, 1881. Type II. Consisting of a Maltese Cross, constructed of gilded silver with red and white enameled arms and with gilded Royal Crown in the quadrants between the arms of the cross, the obverse of the cross with a central red enameled medallion bearing the gilded Royal Cypher of Carol I, surrounded by a white enameled ring inscribed with “Prin Noi Insine” (Through Ourselves” and “14. Martie 1881”, the reverse with a similar red enameled medallion dated “10. Maiu”, surrounded by a white enameled ring dated “1866”, “1877, and “1881”, in gilt numbers, suspended from an integral ring and broad swivel loop from its correct modern replacement neck ribbon, marked “559-39”, “Resch”, “ARG”, “JR” and with a Silver Assay Mark, measuring 45.4 mm (w) x 45.3 mm (l), weighing 24.56 grams.
Accompanied by its presentation case, constructed of a lightweight wooden core, with a dark blue faux leather exterior, the exterior of the lid embossed with the crowned Royal Cypher of Carol I and “Corana României Comandor” in gilt, the interior of the lid lined with a padded silk material embossed with “Monetaria Nationala” in capitalized gilt lettering, with a functional exterior metal hinge, intact interior fabric hinge cover, functional exterior metal clasp closure, measuring 80 mm (w) x 137 mm (l).
A fine example of this award with previous enamel restoration evident throughout the obverse and reverse, within the white and red enameled surfaces, the gilt well preserved, and in overall near very fine condition.
