(Roter Adlerorden). Recreated in Prussia in 1792. Military Division with Swords. IV Type. 1892-1918 Issue. An impressive and highly desirable enameled white cross Pattée in Gold, featuring delicate crossed Gold swords in each quadrant, the obverse centre depicting a hand-painted Brandenburg crowned eagle in enamels, with an enameled white background, the reverse with ornamented cipher of King Friedrich Wilhelm II, also with an enameled white background, period maker’s mark of Johann Wagner & Sohn, Berlin, measuring 47.27 mm (w) x 51.91 mm (h - inclusive of ring suspension), weighing 25.7 grams, suspended by a replacement full-length neck ribbon, with chipping on the 5 o’clock sword, 4 o'clock sword handle replaced, with the 11 o’clock sword loose, presenting minor oxidation on the edges and light contact on white enamels, an excellent example in very fine condition.
Footnote: The Order of the Red Eagle was awarded to both military personnel and civilians, to recognize valor in combat, excellence in military leadership, long and faithful service to the kingdom, or other achievements. The Order could only be awarded to commissioned officers or civilians of approximately equivalent status. The Order is currently abolished.
