Description
(Ordem Militar da Torre e Espada). Instituted in 1549, revived in 1808, discontinued in 1910. Three-piece construction, in silver gilt with red, blue, white and green enamels, measuring 41.7 mm (w) x 48 mm (h) inclusive of its integral ring, tiny chip evident in the white enamels on the tip of the arm at 6 o'clock on the obverse, otherwise the enamels are intact, traditional horizontal clasp affixed to its original ribbon, near extremely fine.
Footnote: The Military Order of the Tower and Sword was instituted in 1549, but fell into disuse. It was revived on November 29, 1808 and discontinued on October 15, 1910. It was awarded for military, political or civilian achievement, in five grades: Grand Cross, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight, in Civil and Military divisions. It would be continued by the Republic of Portugal, effective September 26, 1917 and was based on the Royal Order of the Tower and Sword.
