Portugal, Kingdom. A Military Order of the Immaculate Conception of Vila Vicosa, Grand Cross Star, by Da Costa, c.1900

(Ordem de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Vila Viçosa). Instituted in 1818. The Star of the Order, in silver gilt, a nine-armed star with clusters of five rays, the obverse presents a superimposed nine-arm white enamelled star in Gold with white enamelled stars, also in Gold in each quadrant, the obverse medallion in Gold features the cypher MA for Mary, surrounded by a blue enamel ring inscribed PADROEIRA DO REINO (Patroness of the Kingdom), surmounted by an ornate crown with red and green enamelled details along the riband attached at 12 o’clock, reverse features a vertical pinch pin with a dual catch, central medallion bears the cartouche of J.A. DA COSTA LISBOA, measures 78.0 mm (w) x 92.84 mm (h), weighs 50.79 grams, several enamel chips on the white arms, the 8 and 10 o’clock arm tips have been replaced, in near extremely fine.

Contained in an octagonal shaped case in black leatherette, white silk interior and blue velvet base, measures 107 mm (w) x 112 mm (h) x 35 mm (d), scuffing and discolouration on the exterior, functional hinge and clasp, very fine.
