Portugal, Kingdom. A Military Order of Aviz, Type I, Grand Cross Set, c.1895

 (Ordem Militar de Avis). Instituted 1162. Type I (1789-1894). In silver gilt and enamels, the Grand Cross features a large oval of white enamels with a green enamelled cross fleury and a surmounting sacred heart, a delicately etched silver gilt border, marked on the integral loop with a swan punch mark denoting pieces made from silver, imported from countries without trading contract to France, since 1893, and an owl hallmark denoting goods made from precious metals since 1893, measures 54.4 mm (w) x 88.3 mm (h), worn on a full length green sash, minor enamel scratches to white background on the obverse and reverse, remains in extremely fine condition. 

The Star of the Order, in silver, a multi armed star of delicately faceted rays, a raised facet between each set of three rays, the central medallion features a green cross fleury on a white enamel field surrounded a ring with delicate white and blue flowers , with an exterior ring of etched patterns matching the Grand Cross Badge, a red enamelled sacred heart at 12 o’clock, reverse presents a dual pronged pin, also bears the cartouche of SOUZA, measures 65.0 mm (w) x 74.4 mm (h), enamels intact, lovely patina, in extremely fine condition.
