Description
A bronze-toned stamped metal commemorative pinback badge celebrating the liberation of the Netherlands in May 1945, of circular form measuring 55.1 mm in diameter, the obverse displaying two crossed national flags rising from a stylized horizon with radiating lines symbolizing liberation and victory, the flag to the left representing the United Kingdom with the Union Jack clearly depicted, the flag to the right representing the United States with stars and stripes rendered in relief, above the flags the inscription “1 MEI – 1945” referencing the liberation period of the Netherlands during the final days of the Second World War in Europe, below the flags the Dutch word “VREDE” (Peace), the lower portion featuring an enamelled banner in the Dutch national colours of red, white and blue, the reverse plain with visible die impressions from the obverse design and fitted with its original horizontal pinback fastening assembly, the surface displaying age toning, light abrasions and scattered enamel loss to the tricolour banner consistent with period wear.
Footnote: The Kingdom of the Netherlands was liberated from German occupation in the final phase of the Second World War in Europe during the spring of 1945. Allied forces, particularly Canadian, British and American units, played a decisive role in the liberation campaign that followed nearly five years of occupation beginning in May 1940. The inscription “1 Mei 1945” references the final weeks of fighting and liberation celebrations that occurred throughout the country just prior to Germany’s surrender in early May 1945. Commemorative badges such as this example were produced immediately following liberation to celebrate the restoration of peace and sovereignty, often incorporating Allied national flags alongside Dutch symbols to honour the coalition forces responsible for ending the occupation. The word “Vrede,” meaning “Peace,” reflects the widespread relief and public celebration that accompanied the end of the war and the return of Dutch independence.
