                          Description
Instituted in 1918. A original, period sash fabricated from silk, incorporating a decorative moiré pattern, in a rainbow-like spectrum of orange, yellow, white, pink and red colours, a large rosette with a ring sewn in place near the bottom end for the placement of the badge, the "EDE, SON & RAVENSCROFT / FOUNDED 1689 BY ROYAL WARRANTS / 93 & 94, CHANCERY LANE LONDON." manufacturer's label sewn in place on the rear behind the rosette, measuring 100 mm wide x 780 mm in length, vibrant colours, intact stitching, very light wear, near extremely fine.
Footnote: The Most Refulgent Order of the Star of Nepal was instituted on November 29, 1918 by King Tribhubhan Bir Bikram Shah Dev. It is awarded for outstanding merit both civilian and military, in five grades: Member I Class (Supradipta-Manyabara-Nepal-Tara); Member II Class (Pradipta-Manyabara-Nepal-Tara); Member III Class (Manyabara-Nepal-Tara); Member IV Class (Manya-Nepal-Tara); and Member V Class (Nepal-Tara). Attached to the order is a medal, Nepal-Tara-Padak, instituted by King Tribhuvan in 1936. The sash's manufacturer, Ede & Ravenscroft, is thought to be the oldest firm of tailors in the world. In 1689, the area of London now known as Aldwych, was the bustling centre of the tailoring trade. In that year a respected tailoring family, the Shudalls, started a business that was to become Ede & Ravenscroft. The quality of their work won them the honour of creating the robes for the coronation of Their Majesties William and Mary. They soon became a recognized supplier to the royal family, going on to produce a large number or ceremonial robes for the coronation of His Majesty King George III. Before long, in addition to individual customers, Ede & Ravenscroft provided tailoring and robes to the church, state, legal profession and academia. In the nineteenth century, following the marriage of Joseph Ede to Rosanna Ravenscroft, a member of the successful Ravenscroft wig making family, wig making was added to the firm’s services. Ede & Ravenscroft has been tailors and robemakers of choice for twelve coronations. Today the firm continues to service royalty, the judiciary, civic authorities, academia and business.
