(Орден Књаза Данила I/Orden Knjaza Danila I). Instituted 1853. Type II (1861-1918). An attractive sash badge in silver gilt, consisting of a blue enameled cross with red and white boarders, obverse centre presenting a Gold crowned royal cipher of Danilo I with the Cyrillic surround Danilo I, Prince of Montenegro, also in Gold, with a white enameled boarder and small die stamped silver rays, centre reverse with institution date of “1852/1853” in Gold on red enameled background, circumscribed by For independence of Montenegro in Cryllic script also in Gold, cross is adorned by silver gilt crown with characteristics elongated tassels, maker marked on integral and suspension ring VM for Vinc Mayer, hallmarked on integral ring with Diana's Head denoting manufacture in Vienna and silver content, also marked on suspension ring with Hounds Head with 2 & 4 thereby denoting 900 silver and manufacture in Vienna, measuring 49 mm (w) x 78 mm (h - inclusive of crown and horizontally pierced ball suspension adorned by cross), with minimal enamel contact, on period silk sash, extremely fine. Accompanied by the star of the order, consisting of large sixteen armed silver star, with each arm consisting of alternating clusters of smooth and faceted rays, obverse centre presenting a blue enameled cross with red and white boarders, a Gold crowned royal cipher of Danilo I with the Cyrillic surround Danilo I, Prince of Montenegro, also in Gold, reverse with principle pin assembly, makers cartouche of V.Mayer, also maker marked on 6 o'clock arm with VM, silver hallmarked on 6 o'clock arm with Diana's Head denoting manufacture in Vienna and silver content, measuring 84 mm (w) x 83 mm (h), with enamel loss, near very fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
