Monaco, Principality. An Order Of Saint Charles, Knight Grand Cross, By Halley, C.1870

(Ordre de Saint-Charles). Instituted 1858. A finely made set by Halley, contracted to produce this order in the mid 19th century. Sash badge in Gold with a white Maltese cross with a red enamel boarder, ball finials, green enameled laurels in each quadrant, obverse centre with the royal cipher with Latin Motto Princeps et Patria (leader and country) surround, reverse centre with finely enameled centre and Latin motto surround Deo Juvante (God Help), measuring 54 mm (w) x 84 mm (h - inclusive of swivel crown, horizontally pierced suspension ball adorned by hand engraved cross), 28.00 grams, on fine later period sash, with minor enamel loss to laurels, crown, and reverse motto surround, extremely fine. Accompanied by the star of the order, consisting of an eight arm silver star, typical of Halley, hand filed detailing, with Gold Maltese cross in white enameling with red boards, green enamel laurels, obverse centre with silver beaded surround, Gold royal cipher and Latin Motto Princeps et Patria (leader and country), reverse with dual stays and pin assembly, with ornate Halley makers plate, silver hallmarked on catch and pin with boars head as well as the hallmark of Octave Lasne, a successor of Halley, whose hallmark is known on the St.Charles Order beginning in 1858, measuring 87.5 mm (w) x 87 mm (h), with minor enamel loss to centre, extremely fine.

Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
