Luxembourg. An Order Of The Oak Crown, Grand Officer, C.1965

(Ordre de la Couronne de Chene). Instituted December 29 1841 by Wilhelm II, King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg. A beautiful Grand Officer Set in silver gilt, the badge presenting a white enamelled cross pattee, the obverse medallion in silver gilt features a lovely green enamelled field with a crowned W cypher superimposed in the center, the reverse mirrors the obverse, measures 50.1mm (w) x 55.4mm (h - inclusive of integral ball atop the 12 o’clock arm, weighs 45.2 grams (including ribbon), worn on original neck ribbon of green and yellow silk, enamels intact, in extremely fine condition. The Grand Officer Star features a silver Maltese cross with facets in each arm, the obverse medallion features the crowned W cypher on a green enamelled field, surrounded by a red enamelled ring with superimposed inscription JE MAINTIENDRAI (I Will Maintain), a green enamelled oak leaf wreath sits on the arms encircling the medallion, the reverse features a vertical pin and dual stays assembly, one rivet present on the reverse of each arm, measures 72.4mm (w) x 73.0mm (h), weighs 78.1 grams, enamels intact, lovely patina, in extremely fine condition.

Contained in its case of issue, a green case with white silk interior lid and yellow velvet medalbed with recessed areas for the star’s pins and the neck ribbon, measures 120mm (w) x 220mm (h) 40mm (d), exterior worn and exhibits minor stains, hinge and clasp functional, in very fine condition.

It is the oldest Order in Luxembourg. It is conferred upon civilians and military personnel of Luxembourg, as well as foreigners, in recognition of exceptional achievements.
