Liberia, Republic. A Humane Order of African Redemption, Commander

Instituted in 1879. Multi-piece construction, insignia in silver gilt with blue, white, red and green enamels, a five-pointed star with ball finials, mounted to a five-pointed silver gilt star base, with seven smooth emanating rays in each quadrant, the obverse medallion featuring a hand painted ship approaching the shore, encircled by a blue ring inscribed THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, the reverse medallion presents two figures kneeling at a cross, the badge is surmounted by a green and red enamelled wreath, measuring 59.6 mm (w) x 102.7 mm (h -inclusive of its wreath and integral ring suspension), worn on a segment of original ribbon, center medallions loose, small enamel chips to reverse white star and on wreaths, dark patina on the rays, connecting ring between the badge and the wreath is heavily rusted and bent, in near very fine condition.
