(金鵄勲章 Kinshi Kunshō). Instituted on 12 February 1890 by Emperor Meiji. Showa Period (1926-1989). In silver gilt, a multi-coloured enamelled decoration, the obverse portraying an eight-point red enamelled star with three smooth rays in each cluster, the reverse in silver with four rivets, measures 46.0 mm (w) x 49.8 mm (h – inclusive of integral ball suspension), weighs 30.0 grams, worn on a correct replacement ribbon, cracking and fading to red enamel rays, otherwise enamel intact, gilt on eagle is pristine, a highly sought after order in very fine condition.
Accompanied by its presentation case, constructed of a lightweight wooden core with a glossy black bakelite exterior, the exterior of the lid embossed with the name and class of the award in Japanese characters, with a functional exterior hinge, intact interior fabric hinge cover, and functional exterior metal clasp, measuring 63 mm (w) x 100 mm (l), demonstrating light wear, in very fine condition.
Footnote: This Order was conferred upon military personnel of the Imperial Army and Navy in recognition of exceptional bravery and leadership during battle. It may be awarded posthumously. This grade may be awarded to Junior Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, and Enlisted Rank Soldiers; however, there is evidence that it may also be awarded "en masse".
