Japan, Empire. An Order of the Sacred Crown, VIII Class, c.1900

(宝冠章, Hōkan-shō) Institution Date: January 3, 1888 by Emperor Meiji. A Japanese Order of the Sacred Crown, VII Class. A silver gilt oval medallion with clusters of three cherry blossoms forming the four points of a star, center obverse presenting a silver gilt ancient Japanese Imperial Crown on a silver background, reverse plain. Accompanied by a bow ribbon, the decoration measures at 38 mm (w) x 47.0 mm (h), minor wear, in extremely fine condition.

The decoration is in original case of issue with a black lacquer exterior and Japanese characters, with an interior purple silk with recessed medal bed and compartment for the ribbon, functional hinge and clasp, minor wear, remains in extremely fine condition.

Accompanied by the boutonniere in yellow and red silk denoting 8th class, very fine. 

Footnote: This Order was established by Emperor Meiji. It is conferred in recognition of notable services. Originally it was awarded to Japanese and foreign women, and occasionally men. Now, it is conferred only upon members of the Imperial Family and foreign ladies of distinction.
