Description
(旭日章). Instituted in 1875 by Emperor Meiji of Japan. 1875-2003 issue. Constructed of silver, a superb enamelled white silver-framed Japanese symbol of the Rising Sun, circumscribing a central nice deep red glass cabochon, with mirrored design, the suspension consisting of finely enamelled green and purple symbol of the Paulownia Flowers with Japanese characters on the reverse55.45 mm (w) x 87.80 mm (h – inclusive of integral ring for suspension loop), weighs 69.1 grams (inclusive of neck ribbon), worn on a full length neck ribbon with gilt clasp, enamels bear minor crazing in the arms with a small chip to the green enamel on the reverse of the suspension, otherwise remains in extremely fine condition.
The III Class is contained within a small original diplomatic case, comprising a black lacquer exterior with removable lid featuring gilt Paulownia flowers and an adhered image of the decoration on the exterior and Japanese characters on the interior, with a base featuring a velvet purple recessed medal bed, with neck ribbon storage compartment below, the exterior edges feature a metal loop with a red braided cord and tassel to tie the case closed, the case measures 100 mm (w) x 135 mm (l) x 40 mm (d), minor damage to corners, cord and tassels intact, a lovely case in extremely fine condition.
Accompanied by an additional formal thin neck ribbon in white and red silk, bearing more wear and areas of discolouration, in very fine condition.
The decoration and diplomatic case are contained within a fitted wooden box with images of the decoration adhered to the exterior lid, stamp on the edge, the wooden box, measures 130mm (w) x 185 mm (l) x 70 mm (d), minor wear in extremely fine condition.
