(旭日章). Instituted in 1875 by Emperor Meiji of Japan. 1875-2003 issue. Constructed of silver, a superb enameled white silver-framed Japanese symbol of the Rising Sun, circumscribing a central nice deep red glass cabochon, with mirrored design, the suspension consisting of finely enameled green and purple symbol of the Paulownia Flowers with Japanese lettering, measuring 54.50 mm (w) x 85.90 mm (h - inclusive suspension and its integral ring), with minor lost of purple enamels, suspending by original full-length ribbon with elegant clasp closure, near to mint condition; accompanied by a beautiful independent rosette with button attachment, as well as its hard-shelled case of issue in balsa wood frame with black lacquer finish, exhibiting gilt Japanese characters on the lid exterior, the interior with a purple satin lid liner and recessed purple medal bed, with functional catch, measuring 84 mm (w) x 36 mm (h) x 137 mm (l), presenting worn edges, overall extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of the Rising Sun was established in 1875 by Emperor Meiji of Japan. The Order was the first national decoration awarded by the Japanese government, created on April 10, 1875 by decree of the Council of State. The order is awarded to those who have made distinguished achievements in the following fields: international relations, promotion of Japanese culture, advancements in their field, development in welfare or preservation of the environment.
