(旭日章 / Kyokujitsu_sho). Instituted in 1875. A Grand Cordon Badge consisting of an eight-pointed base in silver with white, green, and violet enamels, a dark red cabochon center, the reverse identical to the obverse, inclusive of suspension 87.3 mm (h) x 55.5 mm (w), includes original neck ribbon, intact enamels, extremely fine condition. Accompanied by the star of the order, constructed of a silver star base, superimposed on an eight-pointed base in silver with a dark red cabochon center, three-prong pin back, 91.3 mm, very fine. In its hard shelled case of issue, balsa wood frame, black lacquer finish, gilt characters on the lid, inside lid lined in violet satin and padded, base in violet satin, with a platform incorporating a recessed medal bed in violet felt, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of the Rising Sun was instituted on 4 October 1875 by Emperor Meiji; it is awarded to people who have rendered distinguished service to the state in various fields except military service.
