Italy, Kingdom. An Order of the Crown, Grand Cross Set, in Gold, by Gardino

(Ordine della Corona d’Italia). Instituted on February 20th, 1868. An Order of the Crown of Italy, the sash badge, in Gold, a white enamel cross with savoy knots in each quadrant, the obverse medallion featuring a Lombardy crown on a blue enamel field, the reverse medallion featuring a black enamel eagle, measures 50 mm (w) x 53.1 mm (h - inclusive of the integral suspension), weighs 15.69 grams, marked “B” between the 6 and 9 o’clock arm, enamels intact, accompanied by the full length sash, in very fine condition. 

Accompanied by the Star of the Order, in silver, an eight point star featuring clusters of alternating smooth and faceted rays, the obverse medallion featuring a Lombardy crown on a blue enamelled field, surrounded by a gold ring then a white ring inscribed VICT. EMMAN. II. REX. ITALIAE. MDCCCLXVI, encircled by a ring of gilt facets, surmounted by a black enamelled eagle on the 12 o’clock arm, reverse presenting a vertical pin suspension, the cartouche of E. GARDINO SUCC. CRAVANZOLA ROMA, measures 89 mm (w) x 88.6 mm (h), weighs 89.79 grams, enamels intact, extremely fine. 

Contained in original case, red leatherette exterior with crowned VE monogram on the lid, the interior with silk marked CRAVANZOLA Succ E. Gardino ROMA, with black velvet partial medal bed, measures 14 cm (w) x 28 cm (l) x 5.2 cm (d), functional hinge and clasp, light scuffing, remains extremely fine.
