Italy, Kingdom. A Military Order of Savoy, Officer in Gold, c.1875

Instituted August 14, 1815. Type II (1855-1946). In 18K Gold, a white enamel cross with green enamel segments in each quadrant, the obverse medallion featuring crossed swords and the date 1853 with royal initials VE, the reverse medallion presenting a white enamel cross on red enamelled field, encircled by the inscription AL MERITO MILITARE, suspended by a trophy of arms suspension denoting officer class, measures 36.25 mm (w) x 58.1 mm (h - inclusive of trophy of arms suspension), weighs 11.54 grams, worn on original ribbon with button on reverse, hairline cracks in white enamel, light contact marks, a scarce decoration in extremely fine condition.
