In response to evolving domestic opinion, eMedals Inc has made the conscious decision to remove the presentation of German Third Reich historical artifacts from our online catalogue. For three decades, eMedals Inc has made an effort to preserve history in all its forms. As historians and researchers, we have managed sensitive articles and materials with the greatest of care and respect for their past and present social context. Description
Description
A battle-worn, Second World War period Hungarian M38 steel helmet, constructed of a single sheet of magnetic molybdenum steel which retains some of its original dark olive-drab paint. Three flattened rivets are distributed around the outer circumference for the accommodation of the interior fixtures, while a wide loop riveted to the back of the skirt allows for attachment to a backpack or other item of fieldgear when not in wear. The crown is also flanked by ventilation holes which are reinforced with magnetic metal loops crimped onto the shell. The rim is fully crimped, providing a smooth edge around the skirt. The interior features a partial blackened leather liner, transitioning into three sets of dual fingers, all perforated at the top with an eyelet for the accommodation of a drawstring which has been lost to time. Two magnetic metal D-rings descend from the sides of the liner and retain a partially-intact, two-piece, blackened leather chinstrap which fastens closed with a magnetic metal buckle. Illegible stamped marks remain visible on the back of the skirt. Measuring 23.5 cm (w) x 30 cm (l) x 15.5 cm (h), the helmet demonstrates issues consistent with both age and field use, including moderate loss of paint and surface oxidation throughout the interior and exterior of the shell, the loosening of the right side shell rivet, and material fatigue throughout the leather elements. Demonstrating the unmistakable signs of wear by Axis-affiliated Hungarian personnel during the Second World War, this storied example remains in a very fine condition.
